Fred Perry Leinster North Champions 2022

"Greenore defeat Malahide in a nail biting 19th hole decider"

What a WIN!!!
Team Captain Jim McKay and his Fred Perry team bring a pennant back to Greenore.  Our first pennant since the mid 1990’s
Who said over 55’s golf is not exciting or challenging!
We know that some of the guys were 3-4-5 over gross – a very high standard of golf indeed.

The team was represented by:
Kevin Maguire and Johnny McKeown
Michael Concannon and Ollie Dullaghan
Ian Young and Tom Ward
David O Callaghan and Gussy Goss
Jim McKay and Seamus Pentony
Brendan Halpenny stepped back with a late injury.
Stand-in manager on the day was Eamonn McCartan.

And it all went down to the last match – where we were 1 down with 3 to play.
They tied the 17th following a great birdie by Malahide – matched by a great nett 3 from Seamus.
Jim made a brilliant par 4 on the 18th – where a 3putt slip by Malahide allowed us to square the match.
On 19, Malahide succumbed again to excellent golf pressure from Greenore (Jim was into 20ft in 2) and Seamus had a gimme for 5 with a shot.  This could not be matched by Malahide, allowing celebrations to begin!
Jim led from the front and pushed from the rear!
The commitment and spirit in this team played a huge part in getting this result.
Senior members of the team only dreamed about ever getting a pennant.  A dream fulfilled this day.
This is Greenore at it’s very best.
The players, united and worked for each other throughout.
Support on the day was great with a lot of Greenore yellow in sight.
We took the pennant home to Greenore on Sunday night, in convoy, where our members, present and future, can remember this little bit of history.
As for the team, it’s back to the drawing board now as we prepare for an All-Ireland Quarter Final.

Well done Jim.  Onwards and upwards.

The course is a superb 18-hole flat semi-links, with a good mix of traditional links and heathland terrain, set in beautiful surroundings with splendid views of Carlingford Lough, Slieve Foy and the Mourne mountains. The Golf Club was founded in 1896 by the London & North Western Railway Company and is steeped in interesting golfing history, including being one of the ten founding members of the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1900.
